ABSTRACT

Background: Spontaneous abortion may indicate a high riskof adverse outcomes in subsequent pregnancies. The aim ofthis study is to find out the incidence of adverse outcomes inpregnancy preceded by spontaneous abortion compared tothose preceded by full term live births.Materials & Methods: A hospital based cohort study done on100 pregnant women attending department of Obstetrics andGynaecology, Government Medical College, Pali (Rajasthan)who have a history of one spontaneous abortion preceding thecurrent pregnancy. This cohort is compared with an equalnumber of women who have one full term live birth precedingthe current pregnancy and no history of spontaneousabortions. Chi-square test was used to find the associationbetween spontaneous abortion and adverse pregnancyoutcomes.Results: We observed that pregnancy complications likethreatened miscarriage, PROM, preterm labour, IUGR,induction labour, & caesarean section were significantly higherin group A compared to the group B. There was no statisticallysignificant difference between the two groups with regard toDiabetes mellitus, placenta praevia, preeclampsia, abruptionand instrumental delivery.Conclusion: We concluded that careful surveillance of womenshould be provided to given history of previous onespontaneous abortion and not to be restricted only to femaleswith history of recurrent pregnancy loss.
